School districts must obtain an affirmative vote from the town where a school is located before closing the school, relocating grades, or closing individual grades (prekindergarten through grade 12).

School board authority to relocate or discontinue use of a schoolhouse is now subject to the new voter approval requirement under Section 564.

Electorate authority to authorize school boards to sell or dispose of schoolhouses is also made subject to the new voter approval provisions.

These requirements supersede any conflicting educational charter provisions or school district articles of agreement.

Effective date: July 1, 2026.
