Motor vehicles weighing 5,000 pounds or less are exempt from safety and emissions inspections for the first 24 months after the date of manufacture

All trailers and semi-trailers are permanently exempt from inspection requirements under Vermont law

Newly registered vehicles not currently inspected in Vermont must still be inspected within 15 days of registration, except those qualifying for the new vehicle or trailer exemptions

Storage trailers no longer need to meet inspection requirements under section 1222, only needing to be properly equipped and in good mechanical condition when moved on public highways

Effective date is July 1, 2025
