Portable solar energy generation devices with maximum combined capacity of 1,200 watts per electric meter are exempt from certificate of public good requirements and interconnection agreements with electric utilities

Devices must connect via standard electrical outlet, include automatic shutoff during power outages, comply with UL 3700 certification, connect to grid-connected buildings, and only be used with smart meters

Electric distribution companies cannot require prior approval, fees, or additional equipment for these devices; customers with existing net metering systems are prohibited from also installing portable solar devices

Local zoning bylaws and deed restrictions/covenants cannot prohibit the installation of portable solar energy generation devices, including in condominiums, cooperatives, and apartments

Effective date is July 1, 2026
