Pistols in vehicles must be stored unloaded in opaque, locked, hard-sided containers affixed within a locked vehicle and concealed from view; rifles and shotguns may use soft-sided containers but require trigger locks

Firearms in residences must be securely stored with a tamper-resistant lock or in a locked gun safe when not being carried or readily controlled by an authorized user

Violations constitute a class 1 civil infraction with up to $1,000 penalty, escalating to misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor, or class C felony if a prohibited person gains access and commits crimes or causes injury/death

Exemptions include antique firearms, farm vehicles on private farmland, licensed hunters during lawful hunting, peace officers, active military on duty, and persons living in vehicles as primary residences

Washington Office of Firearm Safety and Violence Prevention must provide public education on secure storage requirements; effective date January 1, 2026
