School districts must ensure each school develops a cardiac emergency response plan beginning in the 2025-26 school year, covering cardiac arrests on school property and at athletic events

Plans must include designated response teams, AED placement within 3 minutes of any cardiac arrest location, regular maintenance schedules, annual staff training in CPR/first aid/AED use, and coordination with local emergency services

The Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction will administer a grant program for plan development, staff training, and AED purchases, prioritizing schools where 50% or more of students qualify for free or reduced-price meals

All athletic coaches governed by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association must obtain and maintain CPR, first aid, and AED certification beginning in the 2026-27 school year

AEDs must be stored in unlocked locations with clear signage, maintained per manufacturer guidelines, and their type and location reported to local emergency service providers
