Gubernatorial appointments to fill Washington Supreme Court vacancies would require Senate confirmation by a two-thirds vote of all elected senators

Confirmation votes must occur before adjournment if appointed during regular session, or at the next regular or special session if appointed while legislature is not in session

Confirmed appointees serve until the next general election, when voters elect a justice to fill the remainder of the unexpired term

Rejected appointees cannot be reappointed to the same office for at least two calendar years from the Senate vote date

Act takes effect January 1, 2026, only if voters approve a corresponding constitutional amendment (House Joint Resolution H-1236/25) at the next general election
