Personally identifying and financial information from state financial aid applications is exempt from public disclosure under the Public Records Act (chapter 42.56 RCW)

Records from alternative state financial aid applications (excluding FAFSA) must be destroyed no longer than one year after the postsecondary institution's award year ends, unless an audit or appeal is pending

State agencies are prohibited from sharing applicant information with any other entity, including the federal government, without a court order

The council and higher education institutions may share information between themselves to support student enrollment, but cannot disclose records to outside entities including the federal government without a court order or legal requirement

"Application for state financial aid" is defined as any alternative application approved by the council, specifically excluding the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
