Port districts may submit a ballot proposition to lengthen commissioner terms from four years to six years, initiated either by resolution of the port commissioners or by voter petition signed by at least 10% of voters from the last general election

If voters approve the proposition by simple majority, the commissioner elected at that election receives a six-year term, while existing commissioners' terms remain unchanged

When two commissioners are elected in the same or subsequent election, the candidate with the highest vote count receives a six-year term and the other receives a four-year term; all successor commissioners then serve six-year terms

The law does not apply to port districts required to maintain four-year terms under RCW 53.12.172 or to port districts with five commissioners
