Applicants under age 26 seeking a new Washington driver's license must pass a department-approved online course on driver work zone and first responder safety, effective January 1, 2026

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission must contract with a provider to offer the online safety course at no cost to Washington residents ages 15-25

Intermediate license applicants (age 16+) must complete the work zone and first responder safety course as an additional requirement alongside existing driver's education, driving hours, and testing requirements

Revenue from state highway work zone speed safety camera systems may be used to fund the online work zone and first responder safety course, in addition to other traffic safety purposes

The Department of Licensing may waive the course requirement if the online course is unavailable at the time of application
