Washington Senate Resolution 8664 recognizes the transformative benefits of youth sports, noting that more than half of Washington youth participate in organized athletics while only 24% meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity

Acknowledges significant disparities in sports access for girls, youth of color, children with disabilities, immigrants, LGBTQ+ youth, and low-income families, with non-English speaking youth nearly three times more likely to never participate in sports

Promotes inclusive, affordable, and high-quality sports programs statewide, including nontraditional emerging sports such as ultimate frisbee, pickleball, flag football, roller derby, mountain biking, parkour, lacrosse, and martial arts

Supports trained coaches and athletic staff for athlete safety, injury prevention, and mental health support, noting only about half of coaches feel prepared to address mental health concerns

Adopted by the Washington State Senate on January 26, 2026, coinciding with the state hosting 2026 FIFA World Cup events
