School boards must adopt policies by July 1, 2026 governing name and pronoun changes in official school records and employee usage of names/pronouns for minor pupils

Official school records must maintain a pupil's legal name and pronouns from enrollment unless a written, notarized statement is submitted—by the parent/guardian for minors, or by the pupil if 18 or older

School staff may not refer to a minor pupil during school hours by a name or pronouns that do not align with the pupil's biological sex without written, notarized authorization from the parent or legal guardian

Parents and guardians determine what names and pronouns school staff may use for minor pupils; no notarized authorization is required for shortened versions of a pupil's legal first or middle name

An appeals process must be established for denied requests to change names or pronouns in official records, treated the same as requests to correct inaccurate information under federal privacy law (20 USC 1232g)
