Landlords are prohibited from charging prospective tenants any application fee for reviewing or considering a rental application, and cannot accept earnest money deposits that include an application fee

Landlords must give prospective tenants a reasonable opportunity to provide their own credit report before charging up to $25 for a credit check; tenant-provided reports are now valid if less than 6 months old (increased from 30 days)

Non-Wisconsin residents may provide their own background check report less than 6 months old to avoid paying the landlord's background check fee (up to $25)

Landlords who charge for credit or background checks must provide the tenant a copy within 7 business days, in digital or print format as the tenant requests

Takes effect on the first day of the 3rd month after publication and applies to rental applications submitted on or after that date
