Department of Justice would administer a grant program for law enforcement agencies to purchase automated license plate reader systems for public safety and law enforcement purposes

At least 50% of grant funds must be awarded to law enforcement agencies in rural areas, defined as communities under 20,000 population located at least 15 miles from any community of 20,000 or more

Eligible applicants include local government law enforcement agencies, federally recognized tribal law enforcement, and Marquette University police; state agencies are excluded

Applicants must submit a proposed plan of expenditure with their grant application for DOJ review
