Cities, villages, towns, counties, and sewerage districts are prohibited from banning the keeping of up to 4 chickens or quail on residentially-zoned properties by property owners or owner-occupant lessors.

Local governments retain authority to require permits for fowl keepers and mandate notification to adjoining property owners.

Reasonable regulations on fowl housing location and cleanliness standards may still be imposed by local governments.

Roosters may be prohibited by local ordinance.

Condominium associations may still enforce their own declarations, bylaws, and rules restricting fowl keeping.
