Schools that participate in both the National School Lunch Program and federal School Breakfast Program and provide free meals to all requesting students become eligible for additional state reimbursement beginning with the 2025-26 school year

Eligible schools receive state aid equal to the federal free-meal reimbursement rate for each lunch and breakfast served, minus any federal reimbursement already received, effectively guaranteeing full free-meal-rate funding for every meal

Schools not meeting eligibility requirements still receive the state's federal matching obligation for school lunches and $0.15 per breakfast without proration

Eligible institutions include public schools, charter schools, private schools, tribal schools, residential care centers for children and youth, and the state programs for deaf/hard of hearing and blind/visually impaired students

Appropriations for school lunch and breakfast reimbursements change from scheduled amounts to "sum sufficient" funding beginning July 1, 2026
