Sheriff vacancies when no undersheriff exists will be filled by appointment from the presiding judge of the county's circuit court, replacing the current system where the coroner fills such vacancies

Sheriffs must appoint an undersheriff within 10 days of taking office or within 10 days of a vacancy; the undersheriff must be a county resident and certified law enforcement or jail officer

Deputy sheriffs accused of misconduct must request a disciplinary hearing within 2 weeks of receiving notice of charges to receive one; deputies suspended or discharged prior to final determination who are not found guilty must be reinstated with back pay

County clerks assume responsibility for service of process when the sheriff is a party to an action, a duty previously performed by the coroner

Medical examiners will be appointed by the county executive or county administrator (if the county has one) or by the county board, and may be dismissed at will by the appointing authority
