Falsely reporting a firearm as stolen or lost constitutes obstructing an officer, punishable by up to $10,000 fine and/or up to 9 months imprisonment

Commercial firearm sellers must provide buyers written notice of the reporting requirement and penalties; violation punishable by up to $500 fine and/or up to 30 days imprisonment

Law enforcement agencies must create files on reported stolen/lost firearms including date, caliber, make, model, serial number, and distinguishing marks, then forward to Department of Justice

Department of Justice must enter stolen/lost firearm information into national crime information center systems and maintain a searchable database for law enforcement
