Wake-enhanced boating must be conducted at least 500 feet from shoreline and in water at least 20 feet deep; wake-enhanced boating is defined as operating a motorboat to intentionally create enlarged wakes for wakesurfing, wakeboarding, or similar activities using ballast tanks, wave-shaping devices, or other wake-increasing mechanisms

Traditional water skiing, tubing, and aquaplane towing are exempt from restrictions when the motorboat is not using wake-enhancing features

Municipalities (towns, villages, cities, and lake districts) may adopt ordinances with stricter wake-enhanced boating regulations, including area prohibitions, greater distance requirements, deeper water minimums, time-of-day limits, or complete bans on specific water bodies

State and local governments, along with their officers and employees, receive civil immunity when enacting or enforcing wake-enhanced boating ordinances that exceed state requirements, provided they act in good faith
