Hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers would be prohibited from employing individuals to perform surgical technology services unless they complete an accredited educational program and hold national certification, effective January 1, 2028

Individuals employed as surgical technologists on December 31, 2027 would be grandfathered in and exempt from the new certification requirements

Military-trained surgical technologists and those performing duties in federal government service would qualify without civilian certification

Recent graduates of accredited surgical technology programs would have a 24-month grace period to obtain certification while working

Licensed health care providers acting within their scope of practice, as well as those in cardiac/interventional radiology, dental auxiliaries, and optometry assistants, are exempt from the requirements
