School boards and charter school operators must implement cardiac emergency response plans (CERPs) for on-campus cardiac emergencies beginning in the 2026-27 school year, including requirements for AED placement, maintenance, and staff training in first aid, CPR, and AED use.

High schools must adopt an additional CERP specifically for athletic practices and competitions, requiring clearly marked AEDs in unlocked locations at athletic venues and CPR/AED certification for all athletic coaches.

CERPs must include core elements: a cardiac emergency response team, activation procedures, plan distribution, local EMS coordination, annual drills, and post-incident reviews.

Schools must consider recommendations from the American Heart Association, Project ADAM, or similar nationally recognized organizations when developing their plans.

The Office of School Safety may award implementation grants in 2026-27: up to $8,000 for high schools, $4,000 for middle schools (grades 6-8), and $2,000 for elementary schools (K-5), for AEDs and CPR training; schools are not required to comply with AED placement requirements unless grants are awarded.
