Public schools and charter schools must schedule at least 60 minutes of recess each school day for students in kindergarten through grade 6, beginning in the 2026-27 school year

Recess is defined as supervised, unstructured time for physical activity, play, organized games, or social engagement; transition time and time spent dressing for outdoor recess does not count toward the requirement

Personal electronic devices including computers, tablets, and phones are prohibited during recess time that counts toward the 60-minute requirement

Schools may not withhold recess as discipline or punishment unless a student poses an immediate safety threat to themselves or others

Up to 60 minutes per day of recess may count toward required direct pupil instruction hours, increased from the current 30-minute limit under DPI administrative rules
