Sheriff must appoint an undersheriff within 10 days of taking office or a vacancy; undersheriff must be a county resident and certified law enforcement or jail officer, and serves at the sheriff's pleasure

When the sheriff's office is vacant with no undersheriff, the presiding circuit court judge appoints a county resident to serve as acting sheriff until the vacancy is filled

Deputy sheriffs in counties without civil service may only be suspended, demoted, or dismissed for just cause; accused deputies must request a disciplinary hearing within 2 weeks of receiving notice of charges

Deputies subject to suspension, demotion, or discharge who are not ultimately found guilty or whose charges are withdrawn must be reinstated with back pay as though in continuous service

Medical examiner appointment authority transferred from county board to county executive or county administrator (where those offices exist); medical examiner is removable at will by the appointing authority
