During his DNR tenure, the state acquired 142,000 acres of recreational land, reestablished the wild elk population, implemented the nation's first mercury emission regulations, and cleaned up 12,000 contaminated sites

Championed the Public Trust Doctrine to protect waterways and helped develop Wisconsin's wetland protection regulations, considered among the strongest in the nation

Negotiated over 40 agreements with the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission to protect Ojibwe off-reservation treaty rights during a period of intense tension

Inducted into the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame in 2018 and received the National Wildlife Federation's lifetime achievement award in 2025
