Kindergarten through Grade 5 public school teachers providing literacy instruction must complete approved training in the science of reading beginning no later than the 2026-2027 school year

Currently employed K-5 literacy teachers must enroll in the West Virginia Department of Education-approved professional learning program by the 2027-2028 school year

Newly hired K-5 literacy teachers must enroll in the training during their first year of employment

Teachers who complete the training can apply for a Science of Reading endorsement at no cost

Public charter school teachers may voluntarily participate in the training but are not required to do so
