Circuit courts in West Virginia may now use electronic means approved by the Supreme Court of Appeals as an alternative to appointing traditional court reporters for recording proceedings and testimony

The change applies to all circuit court proceedings including civil cases, criminal cases, grand jury testimony, and vacation proceedings before judges

Official court reporters, when appointed, must still take an oath and may attend grand jury sessions but must leave when directed by the foreman, majority of jurors, or the court during consultations or voting

Effective date is July 9, 2025 (90 days from passage on April 10, 2025)
