Current campus police officers at West Virginia state higher education institutions may voluntarily choose to participate in the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Police Officer Retirement System, but cannot transfer any existing service credit or accrued funds to the new system

All newly hired campus police officers must participate in the WV DNR Police Officer Retirement System beginning January 1, 2026

The Consolidated Public Retirement Board will administer the retirement system for participating campus police officers

Campus police officers will no longer be required to participate in the Higher Education Retirement Plan, creating an exception to the general rule that higher education employees hired after July 1, 1991 must use that plan
