Retail establishments, restaurants, and other businesses offering goods or services in West Virginia must accept U.S. currency as payment when the buyer is physically present

Businesses cannot require customers to use credit cards, debit cards, or electronic payment methods to complete purchases

The requirement does not apply to telephone, mail order, electronic, online, or other transactions where the buyer is not present at the physical location

Violations are punishable by fines up to $500

The West Virginia Treasurer's Office may create exemptions based on the nature of the establishment, type of goods/services, currency denomination, or transaction amount
