Students enrolled in "extremely remote schools" would be counted as 2.5 students for state funding purposes, providing additional state aid to those school districts

An "extremely remote school" is defined as a school located 20 or more miles by reasonable bus route from the nearest existing public, charter, or private school established before 2024, serving a minimum of 20 students

"Reasonable route" must include roadways with at least two travel lanes of minimum 10-foot paved width suitable for safe school bus travel; unimproved or unsafe roads cannot be used to calculate distance

County boards receiving the additional aid are prohibited from closing an extremely remote school during any fiscal year they accept the funding

The additional funding is intended to address building operations, extreme weather preparation (snow removal, heating, backup generators), and professional development for rural multi-grade teaching environments
