Senate Resolution 54 recognizes Christy Martin of Mullens, Wyoming County, West Virginia, as a pioneering professional boxer who helped elevate women's boxing to national and international prominence

Martin compiled a professional record of 49-7-3 with 31 knockouts during her career from 1989-2012 and became the first female boxer signed by legendary promoter Don King

She was inducted into the West Virginia Boxing Hall of Fame in 2015 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020, the highest honor in boxing

Known as "The Coal Miner's Daughter," Martin graduated from Concord College with a degree in education and played women's basketball before her boxing career

The resolution also recognizes her advocacy for domestic violence survivors and the 2025 release of a major motion picture titled "Christy" about her life
