Independent candidates for partisan public office must swear they are unaffiliated voters or not registered with a major or minor political party when filing nomination petitions

Signature requirements for independent candidate petitions increase from 2% to 5% of votes cast in the last general election for the relevant office (statewide, countywide, or district)

Filing deadline changes from 70 days to 81 days before the primary election date, with candidates required to first obtain approval to circulate their petition

Candidates have 14 additional days after obtaining petition approval to collect signatures and file the completed petition with the appropriate office

Effective immediately upon completion of all acts necessary for the bill to become law
